April is Jazz Appreciation Month

As a musician who enjoys playing jazz. I appreciate the unique and vibrant history of this musical form.

What is jazz ? Well first of all it was originated in the southern United Stated by African American musicians. Clearly from it's earlier beginnings when the music was known as ragtime,  the genre expanded to include swing; bebop; New Orleans jazz; Big band; Modal jazz; jazz fusion; Bossa nova; Latin jazz; Afro-Cuban jazz; and on and on. While improvisation, fluidity, interpretation are all important element of this music form, it is difficult to describe and many definitions are out there, but one that I like the most is by Trombonist JJ Johnson " jazz is restless. It won't stay put and it never will"

Whatever the definition, Jazz  music spread across the world and continues to give rise to many new forms and influences. "Traditional jazz" is no longer the standard. Many now even question the use of the term "jazz"  and many "Jazz festivals" now showcase musical performers whose styles range from Nu Soul, funk and R&B, genres not associated with jazz. One thing is clear though is that it  is a music form that we must support to ensure that it continues to thrive !
